Frédérique Lecerf is a French artist and performer whose works reflect her fascination with gold. Prized by civilisations for both its aesthetic qualities and its value, the search for gold has been an obsession for many, from an alchemist to a gold digger. Throughout the art history, the pricey material has been widely used, emphasizing what our societies value, from religion to capitalism. Exploring different media and wandering across disciplines, one of her main artistic focuses is summarized by the notion she introduced in 1998: the “Goldenizing”. By adding gold to her work, she adds an extra layer of soul. She enriches or, more accurately, she “goldenizes”. In her “golden dinner” performances, she covers dishes with 24 karat gold leaves, and invites the spectators-hosts to eat.
Her aim is to illustrate the transience of her art while questioning the artistic idea on turning shit into gold. She takes the reversed view , as indeed gold passes through a body and is eliminated as waste. Nothing remains the following day except the artistic experience.
In this act she highlights the use of this precious metal in contemporary art as well as the significance of the gold market. As variations where gold is repeated in an altered form, Lecerf's works involve a wide range of materials from enamelled porcelain to canvas by way of the neon lights, videos and installations.
Frédérique Lecerf studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris and from the University Paris VIII. She has a doctorate in Arts and Arts Sciences from the Université de Lorraine. She has been involved in numerous schools of fine arts and as a curator she has organized numerous exhibitions. She is the author of “The gold variations in contemporary art”, published in 2015.
Her works and performances have been exhibited worldwide both in art galleries and museums.
